1.It's the same reason why a great majority of overactive children are prescribed Ritalin - their little-assholeness is immediately blamed on ADD or ADHD. I'm willing to bet (and have seen first hand in my own life), that many of these cases are simply throwing drugs at the problem.
My hypothesis - we, as a civilized and medically/technologically advanced society, blame science for our own personal shortcomings, because we have the resources to do so.
How many bushmen on the Serengeti or pygmies in the Amazon are fat, or jittery overactive? I've seen very few, and I watch a lot of the Discovery Channel. They don't have access to gastric bypass, or Ritalin, and thus, they fix their lifestyles, rather than medicate and operate.
That was long winded. Sorry.

2.AMEN! This nation has evolved to the point where everyone needs an excuse for everything. Nobody is ever at fault for anything anymore. And this goes for almost everything, not just obesity.
I feel it's almost as if people try to search out situations where they can point the blame elsewhere, sue for damages (even if it's not warranted), and then seek pity. I hate people. Haha.
4.I agree with all three of you. In addition, I'd like to make the following point:
Many people cry "genetics" when discussing the issue of obesity. They claim that fat children are bred by fat parents, and therefore some genetic link must exist. I continue to disagree with this assessment.
What's to say that the "genetics" some claim are the reason for fat children, are really just the "nurture" side of the nature vs. nurture argument? If two fat parents live their lives gorging themselves with trans-fats, saturated fats, empty carbohydrates and countless calories, what is the child expected to do?
That's right, the child mimics the parents, and therefore, we have fat children of fat parents.

In regards to the Ritalin issue, I think if you reduce 3 things, 95% of the problem would go away:
1. Amount of sugar consumed by kids.
2. Amount of time spent watching television.
3. Amount of time spent playing video games.
Period.

This shit isn't genetic, damnit.
