"Funny Games"

I just watched this movie last night. I was intrigued by an article I read in Esquire. The 2007 movie was basically a shot-by-shot remake of an earlier work by the same writer/director. The article describes the movie as a Horror / Suspense, the difference being that you never really see the violence happening. It makes you continually think to yourself, "what exactly is he doing to him/her?" It also makes you want to see the violence.

This is precisely what Michael Haneke wants you to think. In fact, as Esquire states, Haneke basically punishes his audience for their morbid fascination with brutality. While watching it, I couldn't believe how true it was. I was mad that I couldn't see the violence. The twist at the end made me even more angry, where he finally gave the good guys some revenge and gave the audience some violence, and then takes it away from them and us!

I won't necessarily recommend that you watch it, because it's certainly not for everyone. However, if you have a taste for "different" movies, and are interested after reading the Esquire article, rent it. It was definitely entertaining.
